rain and house guests
it has begun again...
i'm sitting here dry and comfortable while i procrastinate at writing my theology curriculum, but i wasn't so dry on saturday night. mark and abbey lanting went out with us to get some little pizzas for supper, and being that it was only about 6 in the evening, we stopped to play a game before we headed home. no problem. as soon as we started playing, the rain started. it poured for the entire hour or so we were playing and didn't let up then. problem.
we left for home and tried to take the route that was the least likely to be flooded. i think we won, but we still hit about 10 inches of water for a stretch of road on the way to our house. the road immediately outside of our subdivision was also flooded with maybe 8 inches of water. but we got home safely. no problem. but mark and abbey still needed to get home from our house and take ate lourdes with them. problem. they tried to leave our subdivision for theirs, a whole kilometer away, but traffic on the only road between the two places wasn't moving at all. so they turned around and headed back to our house. i made apple berry crisp and we watched a bad roger dalton portrayal of james bond and two hours later they tried again. no dice. traffic still wasn't moving anywhere, so they turned around again. this time we all gave up and went to bed. melissa and i in our room, ate on the single bed in zeb's room, and mark and abbey on the double bed so recently vacated by candace.
here's the thing... this wasn't unusual. it wasn't even a particularly bad rain. over the next several months, it will rain enough that travel is impossible unless you have a land rover with a snorkel. many an evening's plans will be thwarted by impassable water lurking just outside our gate.
